Racism debate in the U.S, compels J&J to recall fairness products in India

The company Johnson and Johnson has initiated a complete recall of its fairness products from Middle East and Asia according to media reports. The company had stated that it would be exiting the fairness products portfolio and recently distributors have received a mail from the company on the rollback.

In the U.S, an intense racism debate has been sparked by the death of African American citizen George Floyd who was a victim of police brutality. This has compelled U.S MNCs to review their product portfolio and branding to avoid any unintentional racial stereotyping.

J&J owned ‘Neutrogena Fine Fairness’ and ‘Clean and Clear Fairness’ product lines will no longer be available on retail shelves. The company is in discussions with retailers to update and remove the links to these products and sell off existing stock. It has asked distributors to recall existing stock or destroy it.
