Ranveer Singh - Revolutionary iconoclast who marches to his own beat

Think Ranveer Singh and the picture that one gets is that of a bizarre sense of fashion and some really quirky behaviour. Born Ranveer Singh Bhavnani, but lovingly called Rambo by his friends, Ranveer always manages to grab attention and create headlines. A case in point is how the actor grabbed eyeballs recently when, after several months of near absence from media, he appeared dressed in a turquoise tracksuit by Gucci, wearing some loud gold jewellery a hat and a long haired wig. He channelised the brand’s creative director Alessandro Michle and Jared Leto and also took to social media with an unusual and loving caption for the brand.

But there is more to Ranveer than the plain bizarre. The actor has shown enough brilliance on the big screen to balance out his quirks – ‘Gully Boy’, ‘Lootera’, ‘Gunday’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’, ‘Band Baja Baaraat’, etc. ‘Gully Boy’ could be called a landmark film in Ranveer’s career so far. The film premiered at the 69th Berlin International Film Festival and was commended by Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter for displaying a “pleasingly full emotional range that extends to drama and hip-hop”. ‘Gully Boy’ won a record 13 Filmfare Awards, and the deserving actor received another Best Actor award.

Ranveer’s act as the lovable Bittoo in ‘Band Baja Baaraat’ heralded the arrival of a new actor in Bollywood. The film, which didn’t star any big names, was not a CGI-packed action flick, but was a coming of age tale of two individuals who take their own time and some misunderstandings to realise that they are meant to be together was a sleeper hit. And the refreshing Jodi of Ranveer and Anushka Sharma was welcomed by the audience. ‘Band Baja Baaraat’ fetched Ranveer the first of his four Filmfare Awards – winning the Best Male Debut Award for the year 2010.

The actor has amply displayed his flair for comedy and action in films like ‘Simmba’, ‘Gunday’, ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’. Much more is expected from Ranveer from his forthcoming releases – ‘83’, where he plays the role of former cricketer Kapil Dev; ‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’; ‘Sooryavanshi’ and ‘Cirkus’.

On the personal front, Ranveer and his wife Deepika Padukone form the perfect lovable couple and throughout the pandemic period, the two have kept their fans engaged through their social media posts. The two have paired up on screen for ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Goliyon Ki Rasleela – Ramleela’. They have also starred together in ‘Padmavat’, but Ranveer plays the role of the evil Alauddin Khilji, who doesn’t get his girl in the end because the proud Rajput princess prefers to self-immolate instead of succumbing to the invader Mughal king.

Ranveer is one of the highest paid Indian actors, who has also been featured in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since 2012. He also launched his own production house in 2020, named Maa Kasam, and is set to make his debut on television as the host of a quiz show on Colors – ‘The Big Picture’.

On Ranveer Singh Bhavnani’s special day, Adgully extends its best wishes to him.
