RBNL to join hands with RTL Group's content production arm FremantleMedia

Reliance Broadcast Network Ltd. signs a preliminary, non-binding term sheet with RTL Group, which is part of Bertelsmann. Both parties propose a 50/50 joint venture for the launch of a range of thematic TV channels in India.

With this joint venture Reliance Broadcast and RTL hope to establish a new motivating force in the mainstream entertainment genre. Reliance Broadcast and RTL will be launching two English Channels, which will be Reality and Action based channels.

Their key focus is to jointly launch International English Entertainment TV channels across India in a phased manner. Apart from English language channels Reliance Broadcast wants to make full use of the regional space and Hindi GEC space in the long term relationship as Hindi GEC enjoys the maximum share in terms of revenue.

With RTL's forte in the production of television content with Fremantle, ranging from talent, game shows, drama, daily soaps and reality shows like Idols, Got Talent, The X Factor, Good Times - Bad Times and Family Feud, this joint venture will have an excellent programming library to choose from, ensuring a unique television entertainment experience. And will also cover more ground through various Reliance platforms such as Mobile, Online and Gaming.

RTL Group is the leading European entertainment network. This Luxembourg-based company has 40 television channels and 33 radio stations in ten countries.

Reliance Broadcast possesses 3 Channels through a joint venture with US's No.1 player, CBS Studios International. They include BIG CBS Prime, a premium general entertainment channel, BIG CBS Love, India's first ever international entertainment channel for the contemporary Indian couple and BIG CBS Spark, India's first international youth entertainment channel which is expected to launch by end of month.

In the quarter which ended in December 2010, Reliance Broadcast posted the highest ever quarter consolidated total income of Rs. 70 crores, with a consolidated EBITDA margin of Rs. 6.5 crores. However the Company also said that its financial charges were down by 72% with a debt repayment of Rs. 200crores.
