RP Sanjiv Goenka's new IPL team named Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow, the recently included franchise of Indian Premiere League, has declared its team name: Lucknow Super Giants. Its rights have been acquired by RP Sanjiv Goenka for a massive Rs 7090 crore. Earlier, RP-Sanjiv Goenka has been in charge of the Rising Pune Supergiant team in the years 2016 and 2017 of IPL. The name Lucknow Super Giants has been shared by the franchise on its Twitter account. Ironically, the Pune franchise, which has been part of IPL for two years, and has become the runners-up in 2017, has been named in a similar manner as Lucknow Super Giants. The theme song 'Ab Apni Barri Hai' has been sung by rapper Badshah. The sponsors for the team include fintech platform Credence.com among others.


The formal IPL team of Lucknow has held a contest named ‘Naam banao naam kamao’ to decide the name of the new team where it has received an overwhelming response from a number of people on the basis of which the name Lucknow Super Giants has been decided. Goenka has shared in a video message “Thank you so much for your overwhelming response. The name that we have chosen on the basis of your responses is Lucknow Super Giants. We hope to receive your blessings for our future endeavours as well”. In an exclusive interview with Arnab Goswami, Republic TVs' Editor-in-chief, Goenka has shared that the worth of Lucknow Super Giants will be  $2 billion over the next two years and that the franchise is being treated by him like any other business undertaking. He said that in spite of no games to be held at Lucknow this season, the way people have responded and supported is overwhelming.


The 29-year-old KL Rahul has been paid Rs 17 crore for his role as a skipper. He has been leading Punjab Kings in the last two seasons. The other two members signed by the franchise are Ravi Bishnoi for Rs 4 crore and Marcus Stoinis for Rs 9.2 crore.
Former Indian wicketkeeper Vijay Dahiya has been appointed as the assistant coach and Andy Flower as the head coach. Former cricketer and member of Lok Sabha Gautam Gambhir has been chosen as the mentor for the team.
