SC stays proceedings on IT Rules in High Courts

The Supreme Court has ordered a stay on further proceedings of petitions challenging the new IT Rules in various High Courts. However, the apex court stated that the interim orders passed by the high courts would not be stayed.

This order came following a plea by the Government in July 2021 seeking the transfer of all petitions challenging the constitutionality of the IT Rules from various high courts to the Supreme Court.

The next hearing in the matters will be held on May 19, 2022.

The order passed by the Supreme Court bench comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and Abhay S Oka, stated, “We direct stay of further proceedings pending before the high courts in the respective cases or to be filed hereafter until the next date of hearing involving a challenge to IT rules or cable TV amendment rules which are the subject matter of proceedings in this set of cases.”
