Seminar held to build brand 'Bihar'

Governance Now organised a day-long seminar on Bihar as a precursor to the elections there. The overall theme of the event was BIHAR ON THE MOVE. The event was on Saturday, August 21 at the India Islamic Centre, at Lodi Road, New Delhi.

The event began at 10.30 with an inaugural address by M J Akbar. It was followed by three panel discussions: BRANDED BIHAR TO BRAND BIHAR (the turnaround story), WHAT BIHAR NEEDS NEXT (more development, more jobs, private investment and industry) and WHAT BIHAR NEEDS MOST (political consensus and getting over the deep divisions of caste).

The panel discussions was followed at 3 pm by a special address by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on the topic THE BIHAR OF MY DREAMS.

Bihar Chief minister Nitish Kumar in his closing address said the state would never go back to the dark ages of mis-governance.

"Governance is here to stay - the average Bihari has lost his/her tolerance for misrule," Kumar said.

Amit Kapur. Professor, Management Development Institute said people had been leaving this state for decades now and they would not come back overnight. The state needed to create favourable situations for them.

Badri Narayan, a Dalit scholar from GB Pant Institute of Social Science, Allahabad said in the welfare of dalits Bihar has started where Uttar Pradesh had failed. Identification of Mahadalits amongst dalits was a step in the right direction he said.
