Show Review: ‘Bepannah’ takes an intense look at life beyond happily after

Colors’ show, ‘Bepannah’, has found traction with the viewers, garnering 5,896 (000s) Impressions in its first week itself and is the fifth most watched show on Hindi GECs in Urban [BARC Wk 12, HSM (Urban) : NCCS All : Prime Time (1800 - 2330 hrs) : 2+ Individuals]. 

The show, which went on air on Monday, March 19, 2018, centres around the theme of infidelity. Described as a romantic thriller, with a large slice of mystery, ‘Bepannah’ traces the lives of two couples – Zoya and Yash Arora, and Aditya and Pooja Hooda – and how the two collide in the most unexpected and tragic way. 

Zoya (Jennifer Winget) and Yash (Sehban Azim) married against their parents’ wishes and live in Mussoorie. Yash frequently travels to Mumbai for business. 

Aditya (Harshad Chopra) and Pooja (Namita Dubey) have known each other since childhood and later get married. Aditya, a pilot, has a strained relationship with his father who is a renowned judge, due to the latter’s extramarital affair. 

The first few episodes set the family dynamics and we get to know the interpersonal relationships of the various characters. They two respective couples are shown to have a happy married life – one in Musoorie and the other in Mumbai. 

Zoya wants to give the perfect gift to Yash on their 6 wedding anniversary, while Aditya is looking to make amends for having forgotten Pooja’s birthday. Aditya, on duty, is scheduled to fly out to Kathmandu, but bad weather sees him stranded in Musoorie. Zoya and Aditya’s paths collide at a gift shop, where both of them select the same gift for their respective spouses – a gramophone. What follows is a witty banter between the two, when both receive phone calls about an accident involving their partners. 

It is from here that the story really picks up and sets the tone for a lot of mystery and speculations. When Zoya and Aditya reach the scene of mishap they are in for a shocking revelation – Yash and Pooja have been having a secret affair. Both die in the accident and are found holding hands at the time of their death. 

Zoya and Aditya react differently to this tragic event. While Zoya is heartbroken and doesn;t want to believe that her husband had been cheating on her, Aditya is filled with anger at his wife’s infidelity. He remembers his hatred for his father for his extramarital affair. Aditya’s anger is also directed towards Zoya, as he also blames her husband for taking away his wife. 

Zoya, on the other hand, tells him that they were probably destined to meet as fate had brought them in each other’s paths again and again. 

But where do they move from here on? Were Yash and Pooja really having an affair? Will Zoya and Aditya get together in the future against all odds? Was the accident that killed Yash and Pooja staged? These and many other questions will hopefully be answered in the coming episodes. 

Jennifer Winget had earned a lot of praise for her performance in her last show, ‘Beyhadh’, for essaying a character which had shades of grey. The popular actress is looking to garner the same admiration from TV viewers for ‘Bepanah’ as well.
