Smartphone consumption at ~4 hrs in Wk 18, up 14% from pre-COVID-19 period

With lifting of some lockdown restrictions in Orange and Green Zones across the country, people are now able to move out of their homes and resume a small semblance of their lives in the pre-COVID-19 times. And with this, some changes are now being seen in people’s TV and smartphone consumption behaviour as per the 8th edition of BARC-Nielsen report that has been tracking TV and smartphone consumption curing the lockdown weeks.

The report states that smartphone consumption continues to be at ~4 hours per day in Week 18, which is 14 per cent higher than the pre-COVID-19 period. Data consumption grew by 18 per cent at 1.18 GB per day, as compared to 1 GB daily data consumption in the pre-COVID-19 period. Share of time spent increased for Gaming, Social Networking, and Chat & VOIP vis-a-vis the pre-COVID-19 period.

With people continuing to work from home, Video Conferencing has shot up to 446 per cent in Week 18. Gaming has seen a growth of 50 per cent, which was however lower than 62 per cent growth in the Week of April 25. Social Networking has seen a growth of 41 per cent. This week also saw a rise in Calling, which grew by 5 per cent since the pre-COVID-19 period.
