Social Media platforms under investigation by U.S Government

The U.S Federal Trade Commission has launched an investigation into how social media platforms collect and utilize user data with a focus on how such data practices affects children and teens.

Under investigation are the companies Amazon.com, ByteDance, which operates the short video service TikTok, Discord, Facebook, Reddit, Snap, Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube.

The investigation is not for a specific case but to understand how platforms are gathering and using people’s information after which the FTC will assess potential next steps.

This investigation was announced shortly after FTC launched a lawsuit against Facebook for alleged antitrust activity.
