Sony set to get controlling stake in new Sony-Viacom18 merged entity?

According to media reports, the merger deal between Sony Pictures Network and Viacom18 is in its final stages and will be announced soon. The reports indicate that Sony will hold a 74 per cent stake in the new merged entity, while RIL-Viacom owned Viacom18 will retain the remaining stake.

According to media observers, if the Sony-Viacom18 deal goes through, the new entity might emerge as a strong competitor to Disney-Star India.

Viacom18 Media houses the entertainment channels of Network18. It is a joint venture between TV18, which holds a 51 per cent stake and US-based Viacom Inc, which as a 49 per cent stake.

Sony Pictures Networks India, which has over 20 channels and the OTT platform SonyLIV. Sony will bring its strong presence in sports, which is currently lacking in Network18’s stable.

SET India officials refrained from commenting on this development when Adgully reached out to them.
