SonyLIV to showcase India’s freedom struggle in short film, ‘Azaad’

SonyLIV, the premium digital video entertainment platform from Sony Pictures Networks (SPN), is airing a short film, ‘Azaad’, this Independence Day, which narrates the tale of a nation across two generations, through the eyes of the protagonist Azaad and explores what it truly means to be free in today’s day and age.

The film has been written and directed by Chandan Roy Sanyal exclusively for SonyLIV.com and the SonyLIV App, and produced by Shariq Patel &Trigno Media.

With Independence Day just around the corner, preparations are on full swing to celebrate the moment when India won its freedom. But in our hearts, do we really know what it means to be truly independent, what it felt like living in those days when freedom was luxury and how incredibly fortunate we are today to be able to celebrate our independence? These are a few themes that will be explored in ‘Azaad’.

Set across multiple timelines, ‘Azaad’ is a film about a 40-year-old man with his wife Akira in tow, as he returns to his hometown after many years. The film showcases how little has changed over the years with respect to India’s pride in its independence.

Apart from Chandan Roy Sanyal, who plays the protagonist, the cast comprises artists like Adil Hussain, Sudeep Modak, Inderpreet Singh, Noel Manasseh, Amol Parashar, Shresth Saxena, Merenla Imsong, and Abhay Mishra.

Commenting on ‘Azaad’, Uday Sodhi, EVP and Head – Digital Business, SonyLIV, said, “We are delighted to showcase ‘Azaad’ exclusively on our platform this Independence Day. The movie perfectly encapsulates the spirit of independence and the pride that is associated with it. While giving a glimpse into history through its unique storytelling, ‘Azaad’ will be the perfect watch for our viewers across the country. With this move, SonyLIV further enriches its diverse and engaging bouquet of content offerings for its large and growing viewership.”

He further said, “This is a short film about India’s freedom struggle, where there are many, many stories in each city, each province. Through a digital medium and through this short film, this Independence Day we are bringing one such story live for the larger audience. ‘Azaad’ is part of our attempt to bring new content and stories for our audiences.”
