Star India wins BCCI media rights with bid of Rs 6138.1 cr

After securing the Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights last year, Star India has now won the Board of Control for Cricket in Indian (BCCI) media rights comprising both television and digital for the Indian cricket team and domestic championships. The rights span a five-year period from April 1, 2018 till March 31.

Star India competed for the media rights against Sony Pictures Networks India and Reliance Jio over a three-day e-auction process that commenced at 2 pm on April 3, 2018.

The winning bid for the BCCI media rights is Rs 6138.1 crore. It may be noted here that Star India had been holding the BCCI media rights for the Indian cricket team’s home matches for the period 2012 to 2018. The broadcaster had secured these rights for a bid value of Rs 3,851 crore.

As is known, Star India had secured the global media rights for IPL last year by paying a whopping Rs 16,347.5 crore for a period of five years.

Anirudh Chaudhury, Acting Treasurer, BCCI, tweeted at little past 4 pm today, “Congratulations @StarSportsIndia on bagging the BCCI Media Rights @ 6138.1 crores at an average of 60.1 crore per game.”

He added, “A strong sense of satisfaction for those of us who had been considering an e-auction even for the @IPL Media Rights.”
