TikTok faces ban again; Helo, too, under Government scanner

Amid security concerns raised following the resurgence of the viral Russian app FaceApp, two popular properties of Chinese company Bytedance – TikTok and Helo – are under the scanner of the Indian Government, yet again.

The latest development follows complaints lodged by the political and cultural organisation Swadeshi Jagran Manch, which is an affiliate of the RSS. Swadeshi Jagran Manch has alleged that TikTok and Helo are being misused for anti-national activities as well as spreading child pornography. The Manch has complained to the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

Following the complaint, the Ministry of Electronics and IT has asked TikTok and Helo to respond to the allegations. It additionally asked Helo regarding allegations of the platform putting up morphed political ads on social media and also paying huge sums to other platforms for it.

The Central Government has posed a set of 24 questions to both TikTok and Helo and has asked them to respond by July or else they could face ban in the country.

It may be recalled that TikTok was taken off the app stores of Google and Apple earlier this year when the Madras High Court had ordered its ban.
