Times Network’s notice to Arnab Goswami on using ‘nation wants to know’

Even as Arnab Goswami is gearing up to launch his new channel, Republic TV, Times Network has served him and his company ARG Outliers a legal notice restraining them from using the phrase ‘nation wants to know’.

‘Nation wants to know’ has been a phase used by Goswami in his popular show ‘Newshour’ aired on Times Now. He had quit the organisation as President and Editor-in-Chief of Times Now and ET Now, in November last year.

In response to the legal notice, Goswami took to public forums like YouTube to voice his views. In an audio clip posted on YouTube, he said, “A media group has sent me a 6-page letter threatening me with imprisonment if I ever use the phrase ‘nation wants to know’. They say that they own the phrase.”

Goswami affirmed that he would not be deterred with the threat of imprisonment and added, “Bring your moneybags and your lawyers, file the criminal case against me for using the phrase ‘nation wants to know’.”

He maintained, “The phrase ‘nation wants to know’ belongs to every citizen of this country, it symbolises what we do – pick up issues for the people, ask questions and seek accountability where it is due...Every Indian has the right to use that phrase, the phrase comes from the heart.”

In response to this, a Times Network spokesperson commented, “ARG Outliers had filed for trademark for these and similar phrases which were already filed for and extensively used for years by Times Now. We have responded with a standard caution notice. He (Arnab Goswami) is just trying to gain soundbytes from it.”
