TV Show Review | 2612 is definitely a family entertainer: Rated 3.5 stars

Life OK in their effort to salute all those whose valor gave Mumbai a new lease of life have launched a new thriller ‘2612’ commemorating the brave hearts of the city. Since the terror attacks on 26th November 2008, Mumbai, the city of dreams has been constantly on the move. Mumbai has always been associated with the tagline as ‘the city that never sleeps’ but post the attacks they have been vigilant as never before and have awakened to their responsibility of being alert citizens. The incident which changed many a Mumbaikars' life, has also brought to the fore the courage of unsung heroes. As a mark of respect, Life OK even organized an event in Mumbai on the same day to commemorate the real heroes.

Life OK, at its core has always believed in the philosophy of ‘Cherishing what you have’ and society and values are something that every individual can relate with. With the increasing number of threats to India, it is imperative that citizens stay alert and to prevent any more damage to the metro. At a function held in Café Leopold, Life OK began the day by talking about the current scenario and how it is important for a nation to stand together to face the outside dangers they are susceptible to. Ajit Thakur, General Manager,Life OK organized a small felicitation event to pay homage to the unsung heroes of Mumbai. Also present was Dr. Pasricha who was the Chief Guest for the day. He too shared some valuable insights and opinions about the current scenario. He advised people to be more wary of their surroundings. As each person took to the stage, they shared their stories of the 2008 attack. Candles were lit and a two minute silence was observed in remembrance of the bravehearts who gave their life for the country. Both spoke about and saluted the heroes who faced the tragedy bravely laying down their lives to save million of others in the city and Mr .Thakur hoped that their new show 2612 would bring the nation together to unite in times of adversity.

Saurabh Shukla and the star cast including Shikha Singh, Mahinder Singh and Tejaswita were present there to pay their tributes. Commenting on the launch of the show, writer  Saurabh Shukla, hoped that it would be appreciated by people across the country and  they would take a stand to be more attentive in future thus avoiding a repetition of the 26/11 tragedy. As the day went by, people from different walks of life came together to discuss the one topic that affects citizens the most.

The other form of commemoration from the channel was conceptualised for the small screen as an engaging story of ordinary people who are trapped in a such terror plots. ‘2612’ was aired on 26th November 2012 on channel Life OK on the 4th anniversary of the unforgettable day still etched in the minds of Mumbaikars. They refuse to be bogged down by the memories of that fateful day and have bounced back since then with their ‘never say die’ spirit.

The show portrays ordinary people stuck in extraordinary circumstances. It aims to awaken people from the slumber and be alert to any untoward happenings. It is basically a story of ordinary people entrapped in a situation. It is a tale of a young and resilient kindergarten teacher Rashmi Bhargav who finds herself at the centre of a terror plot more satanic than 26/11.

The show started more like a docu-drama with a background narration which took  viewers once again on a journey of what transpired at different places in the city that fateful night. Then gradually it moved on to the dramatized version showing simultaneous activities happening in the cities of Mumbai, New York and London. Malik and Jidda who are based in New York are plotting a revenge and they have named their mission ‘2612’. They are busy planning another attack on India. Malik’s wife Shahana is pregnant and seems quite unaware of her husband’s nefarious activities. Shantanu Sardesai lives in London with his daughter while his wife Ritika is in  India to attend a family function. All is not well with the couple who are on the verge of a divorce. Rashmi is saddened to hear about this. While both sisters are out on a drive Ritika is kidnapped and her double takes her place. Malik also kidnaps Shantanu’s daughter Suchi in London and holds him to ransom. He wants Shantanu to help him in his revengeful mission which the latter is reluctant to participate in. Meanwhile Ritika’s double who is back in London coordinates with Malik and spies on Shantanu. In Mumbai Rashmi who is engaged to Nishant breaks off her engagement with him.

In Mumbai we are introduced to Randeep Rathore an Inspector with the Police department who has been alerted about Malik and Jidda who are on their way to Mumbai with Shantanu’s kidnapped daughter. Tension prevails at the airport with both trying to evade the police but are ultimately caught by Inspector Rathore while trying to flee the airport.

For channel Life OK ‘2612’ is the next event based programming concept after Ram Leela. This time they have experimented with a thriller format which is sure to be a success. 2612 has been directed more on the lines of a Bollywood movie with intrigue, plot to kill and conspiracy as its theme and fast paced action which is predominant in the serial.  The cinematography and picturisation befits that of a motion picture and it is impressive. The theme is original and especially the concept of the double role played by Ritika which is innovative and makes the story more interesting. The show keeps one on the edge of their seats. The actors are convincing in their respective roles. The high strung Malik and Jidda and a tense Shantanu gave good performances. The show targets all age groups. On the flip side it did rake up a lot of sad and poignant memories which was refreshed in the minds and thoughts of  Mumbaikars after a gap of four years.

At the end of the show a special tribute was paid to Mr. Ombale from the police force who laid down his life that fateful night. 2611 has been marked in blot red patches in our history, it indicates the date when not only Mumbai but the whole country seemed to be in the grip of terror. It was a day of relief for many when recently punishment was meted out to one of the culprits involved in the terror attack.

2612 is definitely a family entertainer with all the ingredients of a Bollywood movie which made it worth the while leaving viewers eager to know the course the story will take!

Adgully gives 2612 a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars.
