TV Show Review | Tota Weds Maina: Humour portrayal could be subtle; Rated 2 Stars

SAB TV has the reputation of being the best comedy entertainment channel among the Hindi GECs with their  slogan  “Asli Mazaa SAB Ke Saath Hai”. The channel guarantees to be a complete family entertainment with Hindi comedy shows for all ages.

The channel has launched their latest comedy show ‘Tota Weds Maina’ . It was aired on 14th January 2013 in the 10.30 pm slot. It is a comeback show for Gaurav Gera best remembered as Nandu of "Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi.” He had been conspicuous by his absence from the small screen. Kavita Kaushik popularly known as ‘Chandramukhi Chautala’ was earlier seen in the  most famous show F.I.R., where she  played the  role of a female protagonist inspector giving the character a humorous  touch.

Tota Weds Maina is a romantic comedy about a mismatched couple who work hard at making their marriage work. It is the story of a shy and introvert Totaram Tiwari’s marriage with the bubbly and outgoing Maina and how  they deal with their shortcomings and overcome their problems with humor.

Totaram Tiwari (Gaurav Gera) is a wide eyed, shy and introvert youngster who portrays much innocence with his boyish and immature looks . He is shown to be of a helpful and considerate nature when he helps a group of boys retrieve their ball even at the cost of confronting a ferocious dog to do so. Reaching home in a bad state he is rebuked by his mother. The episode dwells on Tota’s birthday which was the focused upon the most in the opening story.  There is excitement at Tiwari Sadan and the joint family consisting of his family including his aunt ,uncle and cousins are shown to be very opinionated which creates a lot of problems for Tota . He is keen to have a cake on his birthday the idea of which does not seem to go down too well with his family members especially his father . But with much persuasion he is successful in convincing the conservative parents to get an eggless one. Meanwhile on his way to buy the cake he comes across an astrologer who predicts his marriage in the near future which comes as a shock to him since he is still keen to pursue his studies to become a chartered accountant. We are also introduced to Maina Shukla (Kavita Kaushik) in the latter half of the show who too is portrayed as a talkative,   mischievous and troublesome character  in the local town.

Tota and  Maina  are as different as chalk and cheese. While Tota is simple, honest, sincere and loving, Maina is adventurous, bold and talkative. She believes that life is boring without any twists. In the process, Tota always finds himself at the receiving end of Maina's misadventures.
The much awaited comedy show did not seem to live upto its expectations. Being in the genre of slapstick comedy Tota Weds Maina goes slightly overboard in trying to impress audiences.

Performance wise though the protagonists are shown to be childlike, the grown ups too behave with much immaturity in their respective roles . Their garish sense of dressing and  over-acting too seemed a bit tedious.

They seem to be living in an outdated time zone where modernity has taken a backseat against the backdrop of rural settings though Maina does make an effort to keep up with  the times when she is seen speaking broken English and uses a cell phone to communicate.

The humour portrayed in the show could have been more subtle in nature and more realistic . There is definitely room for improvement and the loud and noisy scenes could do with some  toning  down .

The characters efforts to mix the English language in their Hindi dialogues did create some hilarious moments in an otherwise insipid comedy.

Not much can be said at the moment but we can only wait and watch how this strangely matched couple deal with matrimony and overcome the hurdles they face post marriage.

Adgully gives   the show ‘Tota Weds Maina’ a rating of 2 out of 5 stars.
