Twitter agrees to comply with new IT Rules 2021, seeks more time from Govt

After stalling its decision on complying with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which came into effect from May 25, 2021, it is now learnt that Twitter has conveyed its willingness to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to comply with all the clauses of the new IT Rules 2021.

As per media reports, Twitter’s decision comes after MeitY sent “one last notice” to the micro-blogging site on June 6, 2021. Till then, Twitter was seen at loggerheads with the Indian Government. In the notice issued, MeitY had warned Twitter that failure to comply with the new IT Rules 2021 would lead to the “exemption from liability available under Section 79 of the IT Act, 2000” being withdrawn and “Twitter shall be liable for consequences as per the IT Act and other penal laws of India”.

Meanwhile, media reports have stated that Twitter has sought some more time to comply with the new IT Rules 2021.
