Twitter has now complied with new IT Rules, Center informs Delhi HC

Four days after Twitter informed the Delhi High Court on August 6, 2021 that in compliance with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, it has appointed permanent officers to the positions of Chief Compliance Officer, Grievance Redressal Officer, and Nodal Contact Person, the government confirmed to the Delhi High Court that Twitter “seemed” to have complied with the new IT Rules. Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, appearing for the Centre, informed the Delhi High Court about Twitter’s compliance.

In an earlier affidavit, Twitter had informed a single judge bench of Justice Rekha Palli that it had hired Vinay Prakash as an interim Compliance and Grievance Officer, even as it was taking steps to make permanent appointments to the three mandated positions.

In its affidavit filed on August 6, 2021, Twitter informed the Court that it had converted Vinay Prakash as a full-time permanent employee from August 4, 2021. Chetan Sharma, appearing for the Centre, told the Court that it needed some time to verify the information that Twitter had given.

The next hearing in the case will take place on October 5, 2021, as both Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma and senior advocate Tushar Rao, who is representing the petitioner, have sought time to file their replies to Twitter’s affidavit.
