#TwitterChat: The blurring lines of communication on digital media

Fledgling social platforms were a kind of utopia for Internet users as a vehicle for freedom of speech and expression. That’s why you see some of the worst examples of hate speech, sensitive material and incendiary dialogue happening in the early days of adoption of these platforms.

As these companies attracted more business, they have to tighten the clamps on content that violated their freshly established and vague content policies to making it a brand safe environment. Individuals often got the short end of the stick, with social media companies arbitrarily blocking and removing posts based on their own agenda.

Yet these players continue to maintain that they are neutral platforms that uphold freedom of speech. With a tightening regulatory landscape across the globe, these platforms are increasingly behaving like publishers, which poses the key question on how they should be governed in the future.

Adgully is organising a #TwitterChat on Friday, February 12, 2021, between 3 pm and 4 pm on the topic ‘The Digital Paradox – Blurring Lines’ to understand how individuals and organisations should prepare for the consequences when publishing on such platforms. It will address key questions like should every organisation have a social media policy for its employees? And what kind of liability/ accountability should your statements on social media have on your personal/ professional life?
