Uday Varma to retire from MIB!

After being at the helm of affairs for over one and half years, having spearheaded the rollout of digitization in four metros and 38 other cities, Uday Kumar Varma, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) will be retiring on June 30, 2013. Today, Friday June 28 will be his last working day in office.

The digitization was a huge task that was led from the front by Varma and successfully executed – taking all along, the broadcasters, broadcasters and the consumers. As a result today television signals in over one million households have been digitized. The fruits of his efforts will be evident five years down the line. In an earlier sting Varma was the  Joint Secretary in the Labour Ministry and  Additional Secretary & Special Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.

Belonging to 1976 IAS batch, Varma has served in various capacities in a career spanning 37 years. He was Secretary in the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. He belongs to 1976 batch of IAS of the Madhya Pradesh cadre. He was also the District Magistrate and Collector in three districts of Madhya Pradesh – Panna, Mandla and Bilaspur. Varma was the Director, Handlooms and Textiles, Industries Commissioner, Commissioner, Women & Child Development, Tribal Commissioner and Health Commissioner in the State of Madhya Pradesh.

He has written two books on labour issues in addition to several papers for national and international forums.
