UP polls see Bhojpuri artistes lock horns rap for rap

Election fever has gripped the nation once again, especially in the five states that are going to polls in February 2022. Of these five states, Uttar Pradesh is the most crucial one as the BJP fights off a spirited opposition, even as the Yogi Adityanath Government faces severe criticism over the handling of the Covid second wave, the killing of protesting farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri when a Union minister’s son ran his SUV over them, the Hathras rape case, etc.

Given the rising cases of Omicron across the country in the third wave, the Election Commission has issued strict directives for holding political rallies that usually attract thousands of people gathering. Various political parties have launched their digital campaigns in the recent days to woo the voters.

BJP recently released a music video featuring popular Bhojpuri actor and BJP MP Ravi Kishan, rapping to the beats of ‘UP mein sab ba’ (UP has everything). The video sees Kishan belting out the rap song highlighting the achievements of the Yogi Government over the last five years – in terms of bringing about development, generating employment, reduction of crime, successfully handling the Covid crisis and more.

Quick on the heels of Kishan’s rap song, Bhojpuri singer Neha Singh Rathore released a rejoinder rap song – ‘UP mein ka ba?’ (What’s there in UP?). The song sees Rathore rap about the growing instances of crime, especially crimes against women, in UP, the protesting farmers being run over by a Union minister’s son, the mishandling of the Covid crisis, which saw several corpses floating on the river Ganga, and much more.

Rathore cheekily ends her rap video with “Zindagi jhandwa, phir bhi ghamandwa” (Life is terrible, but still so much arrogance), which incidentally happens to be a very popular dialogue of Kishan from one of his films.

Meanwhile, the Congress party’s campaign for UP targets the youth and women, especially girls – ‘Ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon’. The video gives a modern rock twist to famous Durga Stotram, ‘Aigiri Nandini’, and showcases how women are breaking through all barriers and making a place for themselves in traditionally male dominated fields.
