Varun Dhawan on the OPPOrtunity to create a greater bond with smartphone brand

His affable, boy-next-door charm has endeared Varun Dhawan to his fans. The actor has created a space for himself in diverse roles – from romantic roles in films like ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ to tough roles like ‘Badlapur’ to offbeat roles like ‘Sui Dhaaga’ and ‘October’. Given his popularity with the masses and non-controversial image, Dhawan is also a favourite with brands.

OPPO recently onboarded Dhawan as the brand ambassador for the second time. In order to promote OPPO’s F-19 series of smartphones, Dhawan changed his Instagram account to ‘Vroom Dhawan’. It soon caught everyone’s attention and generated a lot of chatter on social media.

A day later, OPPO dropped its campaign, titled ‘Vroom Dhawan’, where the actor is seen giving out autographs to his fans with the alias ‘Vroom’, making his fans curious again. The idea was to promote the new OPPO F-19s phone, which comes with a 33W VOOC flash charge and in gold colour that represents the mood of the ongoing festive season.

Adgully caught up with Varun Dhawan to know more about the OPPO campaign, his journey as an actor as well as the face for numerous brands and more.

What motivated you to associate with the #WhatsUpWithVarun campaign?

Technology has always excited me. Throughout my association with OPPO, I have seen how the brand has always been driven by innovation, and in my long-standing relationship with them, I have witnessed many tech advancements and industry-first features brought into India.

For instance, OPPO’s VOOC flash charge is an innovation that ensures quick and safe charging of smartphone batteries.

I have always loved the connection I share with my fans and OPPO has given me this OPPOrtunity to create a greater bond with them.

You have been associated with OPPO for different products. Why did you select OPPO as a brand for an association?

I have been very particular about choosing the brands that I work with. I met with OPPO and had a list of questions about the brand. During my conversation with them, I also got to know that OPPO is among the top ten companies.

When it comes to design, OPPO has invested heavily in creating amazing camera designs, for instance, the shark fin camera in its Reno 10x zoom phone. OPPO phones have always offered premium picture quality and precision.

I have only shared very select features and I could really go on and on here.

What has been your experience so far with this campaign?

It’s been actually a fun experience with this campaign, enjoyed every bit of it. I am truly impressed with the kind of innovation OPPO brings. For instance, I got to know that the OPPO F-19s bags some amazing tech features like a 5000mAh battery with 33W VOOC flash charge in a super slim design with an AMOLED screen.

Since this campaign is about ‘What’s Up with Varun’, were you involved in the conceptualisation as well?

OPPO as a company is extremely engaging and transparent. The brand has always believed in working together, understanding my views, and incorporating the details in the campaigns. I have been deeply involved with the campaign since the day we began our journey together. It’s great to be associated with my OPPO fan-family for their upcoming launch of OPPO F19s.

Your fans have been patiently waiting for your new films. What is really up with Varun Dhawan?

Well, I think everyone now knows that my latest films ‘Bhediya’ and ‘Jug Jug Jeeyo’ are set to release in 2022.

What are your views and observations on content consumptions by the viewers during the pandemic time? According to you, what scope does OTT provide to artists? Do you see OTT leading the content game in the future?

The pandemic has totally changed the content consumption scenario. OTT has become the way of life. My movie, ‘Coolie No.1’ was released on an OTT platform and it received huge appreciation from everyone. This is only possible because everyone has a mini-movie theatre in their pockets. The F19s, for instance, has a clear and crisp wide-screen display that allows you to watch HD videos and movies wherever you are.
