Vempati recalls his successful tenure at the public broadcaster

Shashi Shekhar Vempati, former CEO of Prasar Bharati, recently spoke about his time at the national broadcaster with broadcast journalist and anchor of "Media Dialogues" on CNBCTV18, Anuradha Sengupta.
In addition to the satellite, Prasar Bharati, one of the largest broadcasting organisations in the world, also runs an extensive terrestrial network. Vempati mentioned during the interview the changes which were brought during his tenure, including growing NewsOnAir app, Free Dish, which are Prasar Bharati’s own media platforms, phasing out obsolete technologies, measuring the manpower roadmap for digital technology.
It was highlighted by Vempati that the biggest change at the public broadcaster in the last five years was the change in the revenue mix. The commercial revenues increased by 13% in FY22. The primary source of revenue for the broadcaster through sponsored and advertising content was the government.
Vempati noted the change in the last five years of how non- traditional sources of revenue have reduced the dependence of government sources of revenue on AIR and DD.
Vempati said: “Free Dish revenue was about Rs 270 crore, when I joined as CEO; however this year and in the last financial year, it has crossed the Rs-700-crore-mark to reach Rs 750 crore. Digital revenues were a rare phenomenon five years ago; however, currently digital revenues reach humungous crores, growing rapidly at 30-40% in a year”.
Vempati also noted about having assets such as TV towers, which are leased out to telecom operators and private FM broadcasters, generating another Rs 100 crores in terms of revenue.
