Walmart Foundation commits INR One Crore to relief efforts for flood victims

As Chennai & other parts of Tamil Nadu continue to struggle with unprecedented devastation caused by heavy rainfall & floods, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are working to support relief and reconstruction efforts.  The Walmart Foundation has committed INR One Crore to Charities Aid Foundation India (CAF India) for the provision of health and hygiene kits, food baskets, safe drinking water and tarpaulins. In addition, many Walmart India associates made immediate in-kind contribution (clothes and other urgent supplies) to the NGO, Goonj, in response to the crisis.

Ms. Meenakshi Batra, CEO, Charities Aid Foundation India (CAF India) said, ``The devastation is extensive. Even as relief camps and medical facilities are being set-up, we have much need for the community to come together and support those affected. Together with organizations like Walmart and the Walmart Foundation, we hope to bring immediate relief to the people and help rebuild Chennai and other affected part of Tamil Nadu.”

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation, along with Walmart India, continue to evaluate the situation in Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Krish Iyer, President & CEO, Walmart India said, “We stand by the people of Chennai and neighboring areas of Tamil Nadu who have been affected by the floods. In addition to the relief grant of INR One Crore by Walmart Foundation, we have pledged our support to the community through voluntary in-kind donations & volunteering activities.”

Walmart is committed to strengthening local communities and disaster relief and preparedness is an important part of that commitment. At Walmart, we help prepare for and provide disaster relief in the aftermath of hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes, floods and earthquakes through our emergency operations center and our collaborations with organizations like the Red Cross and United Nations. Over the last 10 years, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation have given more than $43 million in cash to various countries burdened by disaster.
