We don’t change our policies based on one creator: Spotify CEO

“I think the important part here is that we don’t change our policies based on one creator nor do we change it based on any media cycle, or calls from anyone else. Our policies have been carefully written with the input from numbers of internal and external experts in this space. And I do believe they’re right for our platform. And while Joe has a massive audience—he is actually the number one podcast in more than 90 markets—he also has to abide by those policies,” said Spotify CEO and co-founder Daniel Ek, according to The New York Times report.
He was referring to the audio streamer’s handling of the ongoing dispute involving Joe Rogan and his Spotify-exclusive podcast.
"In general, I'd say it's too early to determine what the impact would be," Ek remarked during an earnings call on February 2.
“And usually when we’ve had controversies in the past, those are measured in months and not days. But I feel good about where we are in relation to that and obviously top line trends looks very healthy still,” he said.
Ek addressed the matter during a town hall gathering with workers, according to The Verge, in addition to his statements during the earnings conference. "The fact that we hadn't acted quickly enough to make our policies public outside has made the situation more tough," he reportedly stated. "And these policies have been in place for years, but not making them public was a mistake." That's on me, and it's something I'll learn from."
More than 250 doctors signed an open letter denouncing The Joe Rogan Experience in December 2021, stating that the presenter has promoted "false and societally destructive assumptions" regarding the coronavirus.
Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young has since taken his songs from Spotify, claiming, “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.” Many other musicians, including Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, David Crosby, and others, have asked for their songs to be removed from Spotify in solidarity of Young's protest. As a result of the departures, Spotify has added content advisories to podcasts that mention COVID-19.
