Week at a glance: Prasoon Joshi to helm Censor Board, Marquees 2017

The week (August 7-12) has ended with an interesting changeover at the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) – veteran adman Prasoon Joshi has been brought in as the Film Censor Board’s Chairperson after the ouster of Pahlaj Nihalani.

The week began on a sweet note with Friendship Day and Raksha Bandhan spreading joy and sibling love. Brands had a busy time tapping into consumer sentiments around the two occasions and there were campaigns galore.

While on Amazon, Nitesh Kripalani, Director & Country Head at Amazon Video India, exited the company this week, citing “personal reasons”. While the company scouts for his replacement, Vijay Subramaniam, Director - Content, Amazon Video India, has taken on Kripalani’s responsibilities.

There are changes afoot at the top management of the recently formed entity following the merger of GroupM agencies Maxus and MEC, which is yet to be named. As part of this restructure, Ajit Varghese, CEO - APAC, Maxus, will now take on a global role. He will shift base to London, where he will head Global Market Development as President – Market Development of the merged entity.

In a significant development, The Walt Disney Company has announced that it will be acquiring majority stake in direct-to-consumer streaming technology and marketing services company BAMTech. Along with this, Disney is planning to launch its ESPN-branded multi-sport video streaming service in early 2018, which will be followed by a new Disney-branded direct-to-consumer streaming service to be launched in 2019. With this strategic shift, Disney will end its distribution agreement with Netflix for subscription streaming of new releases, beginning with the 2019 calendar year theatrical slate.

IPG Mediabrands India has launched a new data management platform (DMP) in partnership with international technology company Mediamath. The data management platform will integrate into Cadreon, which is IPG Mediabrands’ existing real-time marketing and programmatic buying unit.

Putting to rest all speculations, Sony Entertainment Television and Kapil Sharma have renewed their partnership for ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’. The contract has been extended for a year. ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ will continue to air every Saturday and Sunday at 9 pm.

Meanwhile, Sony is also all set to launch its new mythological show, ‘Vighnaharta Ganesh’, which premieres from August 22. The show, which will air Monday to Friday at 8.00 pm, will be replacing popular mythological show ‘Sankat Mochan Hanuman’. That’s not all, Sony is also gearing up to refresh its programming line-up with as many as 6 new shows soon.

As per BARC ratings for Week 31, Zee Anmol further consolidated its lead, even as Colors clawed its way up to the third spot buoyed by the strong show put up by its reality show, ‘Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi – Pain in Spain’.

The week wrapped up with the inaugural edition of The Ad Club’s Marquees 2017 awards. The awards lauded brands that showcased resilience and emerged successful in the face of numerous adversaries iterating the well-known adage – “That which does not break you only makes you stronger”. Brands making their mark included LG Electronics, Maruti Suzuki, Amazon, Frooti, Wai Wai Noodles and Pro Kabaddi League, among others.
