Weekend Exclusive | I am in a relationship with radio: 92.7 BIG FM's RJ Divya
Being, brought up in multicultural and multilingual surrounding, she has always had an inclination towards artistic fields, specifically, theatre and that's where she believes, she discovered the "performer' in her. "I took up law in college because I thought that is what fits the best, with reading as my favorite hobby and the ability to put my thoughts and points across correctly and clearly", she said. But soon she realized that it is not what she was interested in. An avid listener of radio show called "Yaadien' by Karan Singh; she explored radio and that's when her "real' journey began. From there on, from a first gig as a request show host at Win 94.6 FM, then to Red FM, Fever 104 etc, to being associated with theatre as a performer with a play "Ek Juth' by Nadira Babbar; Divya, has done it all. From there on the professional career graph, has only scaled up, positively.
RJ Divya has very interestingly defined her association with radio, as a "relationship'! "I have been in a relationship with Radio for a very long time. I have had my "first love', "flings', "break up', all, with the radio", she said.
According to her competition can be perceived in two ways, one, "it is pretty easy to break in the monotony and get a fresh new "product' for the listeners; but also tricky to make smooth efforts to carve a niche and make your presence felt", Divya opined. She believes that being natural and consistent are the basic tricks of the trade, in delivering good quality and entertaining shows.
Talking about radio as a medium; RJ Divya was of the opinion that, "radio holds high potential that is still unexplored". What India needs, is to tap the huge amount of talent pool it has, and equip it accurate knowledge and understanding of the medium, along with developing interest and liking towards the medium", she said.
With a number of young radio aspirants around, she believes that a few basic rules should be very clear, before entering the medium. "Firstly know that radio is an "art' which needs at least hands on training if not professional training", she said. Talking about opportunities that one can have in radio, she went ahead to say that, "being an RJ is not the only thing that one can do at the radio station. One can be a part of radio production, music content, script writing etc."
Lastly, defining a "mantra' for radio enthusiasts, RJ Divya said, "RJs need to master the art of engaging, impressing, interacting and entertaining with hundreds of people, without being pretentious.
