Weekend Exclusive | Kainaz Motivala: Script to Screen and back again

Even if someone maps out their life, there are events that could lead one to unimaginable crossroads and eventually their life takes a different turn. Kainaz Motivala, began her career in Bollywood as a result of choosing acting over journalism. Before her first audition and an eventual role in a major Bollywood release, Paathshaala, Motivala worked with a beauty and fashion Magazine and has contributed many articles to various publications as a freelancer. Since then she has been determined to make a name for herself in the film industry.

Motivala has a passion for writing. Talking exclusively to Adgully, She said, "Writing is my passion. I think I express myself well through my writing. It's a stress-buster for me and something I really enjoy." She was recently in the city to promote "Urban Shots." The novel is a collection of 29 tales written by 13 authors. Her story is titled 'Hope comes in small packages' and is a wonderful depiction of a woman who loses her child and still finds a reason to live on, against the backdrop of an urban city lifestyle. She then stated, "I firmly believe that you always get what you need, it just doesn't always come in the shape, size and form that you expect. My story deals with how a puppy helps a woman overcome her loss and loneliness. I love dogs, so it's also partially inspired from there."

Speaking on the challenges she has faced in Journalism and Acting, Motivala is quick to clarify, "I am a qualified journalist so that wasn't very difficult for me. Making the decision to completely switch careers was difficult but once that was done, it felt liberating." On the acting front, she is open about the fact that it is difficult for a person with no background whatsoever in the film industry. "I've worked with some great people who have helped me grow as a person and as an actor!" she adds.

Speaking on some of her best works that she is proud of, Motivala said with a smile, "As far as acting is concerned, I'm still very new. My best work is yet to come but I'm extremely proud of Wake Up Sid. I learnt a lot from Ayan, Ranbir and Konkona. Also I am very grateful for having been given the opportunity to be a part of such an amazing film and work with such a great production house as Dharma Productions."

As far as her writing is concerned, Motivala has done a number of features for NGO's and takes pride in them. She is also happy with her first story in Urban Shots and also features on the cover of the book.

Moving on to lighter topics, Motivala loves movies that are both fun and romantic. She prefers fiction over non-fiction and some of her favourite novels are; The Harry Potter series, A Walk to Remember, Love Story, P.S: I Love You and Marley & Me. In non-fiction she mentions how a book "Laws of the Spirit World' moved her and changed her life. "It's a book that came to me at a point in my life when I was very low and it gave me hope. I think this book should be read by everyone. It's helped me become more spiritually aware and I love that change in my life," she further explained.

On plans for the future, Motivala is clear in her goals. She wants to make a mark for herself and admits "My future plans are to do good films which are entertaining and that I would personally like to watch." She is keen to keep her passion for writing alive and looks forward to writing more short stories. She further added, "I also want to do some good work for the social causes I believe in."

When asked if there was any message for her fans, she said, "As an actor, I thrive on the encouragement and motivation that is showered upon me by the audiences." She is humbled by the love and support that her fans have given her through various platforms like Facebook and Twitter. "I just want to say a big thank you!" she further added. | By Janees Antoo [janees(at)adgully.com]
