Weekend Exclusive | The Dancing Sensation: Remo D'souza

Ace choreographer and director Remo D’souza who recently completed shooting for his next film Any Body Can Dance (ABCD) is judging the fifth season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, which airs on Colors along with Madhuri Dixit and Karan Johar.

Adgully caught up with the man who made dancing a cool career to have on the sets of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Talking about Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, Remo D’souza said, “Jhalak Season five is extremely different from the previous seasons. The format of the show remains the same considering the fact that it is an international format.  But the dance forms on the show would definitely be different and there would be many more international dances.”

Remo who has also judged Dance India Dance exclaims that there is a vast difference between the two reality shows. He points out that in Dance India Dance, the contestants were common people who learnt and then rose to fame whereas in Jhalak, the contestants who would prove their dancing talent are already well established celebrities and masters in their own fields.

Remo asserts that it is very important for him to see how seriously the performers take their dance and how they grow as dancers. Talking about the contestants on the show Remo said, “The contestants are extremely varied. On one hand, there is Isha Sharvani who has a different dance style namely rope mallakhamb and kalari, whereas on the other hand there is international cricket superstar Sanath Jayasuriya who has never danced before. Thus, each of the contestants will be coming out of their comfort zones to prove their mettle in dance. It is extremely commendable of them to do so.”

Remo is extremely excited to be judging Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa along with co-judges Karan Johar and Madhuri Dixit. He adds that he will not only judge the contestants but will also play the role of a mentor.

Talking about his upcoming film ABCD, he said, “The shooting has been completed. The post production of the film is in process.  I have always felt that anybody who is born in this world can dance. ABCD is basically about that.”

Remo would also like to make FALTU 2 but currently he has chosen to concentrate on ABCD. He also looks forward to producing an action film in the near future.

Remo, who directed FALTU; which was declared a hit at the box office; says that his favourite director is Rajkumar Hirani and he loves the way his films send out social messages besides being great entertainers.

Remo says that he looks up to Michael Jackson for inspiration. His mentor as a choreographer has been Ahmed Khan. | By Aditi Popat [aditi(at)adgully.com]
