What WhatsApp Head Will Cathart said about accelerating digital inclusion

Facebook has launched the first edition of Fuel for India to showcase the importance of the Indian market for the social media giant. The two-day event held over December 15 and 16, consists of several relevant conversations for the Indian market, stories and case studies and Facebook’s plan to further fuel India’s progress through various products and programs.

One the key acquisitions for Facebook has been the popular messaging app WhatsApp. WhatsApp is truly situated in the heart of India with millions of people using it to connect with their loved one. During the pandemic, WhatsApp was the only way for many to check on their loved ones, stay connected with friends’ groups, work remotely and in all, get through these testing times with a minimum of fuss.

Facebook has constantly evolved WhatsApp for the Indian market as they look to leverage the text messaging giant for their E-commerce plans in India.

As a part of Fuel For India 2020, Ajit Mohan, Vice President and Managing Director, Facebook India, welcomed the Head of WhatsApp, William Cathart, who spoke about ‘Accelerating Digital Inclusion With WhatsApp’.

Cathart began by talking about an Indian example of how people are using WhatsApp as a means to leverage their business. Speaking about an Avocado seller in Mumbai’s Crawford Market, Cathart said that while competing with other fruit stalls, this seller generated most of his business through repeat customers who would message him on WhatsApp. He could check the farmer’s harvest via WhatsApp Video call and always be ready to send out his supply.

Cathart also talked about how WhatsApp is planning to get WhatsApp Pay for more users in India with a goal to make payments as easy as texting on WhatsApp while being completely safe and secure.

While addressing viewers, Cathart also spoke about how important privacy and security are to WhatsApp, importance of private communication, their partnerships with government authorities during the lockdown and the vision for WhatsApp in India.
