What will be the destiny of FILM-MAKING in Technology Dominant Future?

Dr(Er) Azad Jain (Actor/ Director/ Writer/ Engg Consultant)

Technology, if simply put, is the skills used to achieve goals and solve problems. In the future, everything will be “smart”- connected and data-driven. You are now about to read the world's most detailed article about the FUTURE OF FILM-MAKING. You are about to find How technology will completely manipulate the entire process of filmmaking? How Artificial Intelligence will bring a new era to the Film Industry? How will Theatres regain their lost popularity in the future due to technology? This article is very important as it marks a step towards the future of Show-biz. Technology can be a very powerful tool for transforming Filmmaking. It can help affirm and advance relationships between actors and viewers.
“Cinematic experiences will evolve to feel as natural and as real as a day in your life, but have the amazing characteristics of the kind of exciting stories that we are used to being told”, said American director and VR guru Chris Milk to BBC Culture.
According to him, the future will offer customized immersive experiences. He adds that machines will be capable of “crafting a story in real-time that is just for you, that uniquely satisfies you and what your likes and dislikes are.”

How technology will impact Actors and Acting?
In the future, with the help of Quantum computing and advanced technologies like Real-Time Rendering(R.T.R.), Ray Tracing, Computer Generated Imagery(CGI), and with technically advanced devices like Drones, and 360-degree cameras having pixels more than 4K(4,000), Film-Making will be made very easy. In the future, all the actor need is to make an agreement and finalize his/her stipend, so that he/she can lend their physical attributes(i.e. the 3D model) and voice to the Productions, the rest will be taken care of by AI(Artificial Intelligence), VR(Virtual Reality) and AR(Augmented Reality). The actors will not be physically present at the film sets but their AV(Audio Visual) or Digital Clones will be filmed by using Drones.
For example, in the movie Spiderman: Far From Home the villain Mysterio could create a place that looked exactly like the real place, but in reality, it was virtually created using Drones and Digital Clones. Here, every incident was just an illusion. This is how the Film Industry will work in the future. Every scene will look like an illusion for the viewers. With the help of technology, nothing will be impossible.
In the future, “flat-media(it is the main means for communication with the public via broadcasting, publishing and, the internet) will still be there with us, just like the radio will still be with us. But there’s no way that film-making is going to stay flat”, said famous American journalist and Entrepreneur Nonny de la Pena. According to her, there will be dynamic changes in the sector of film-making in the coming years.
The Indian film industry was valued at over 180 billion rupees in the financial year 2019, and it was estimated to reach up to 260 billion rupees by the end of the financial year 2024. The global film industry, including box office and home entertainment revenue, was worth $136 billion in 2018 and is expected to keep growing over time. The increasing popularity of 3D movies that give the audience experience of virtual reality is projected to drive growth.

Change regarding the viewer’s Cinematic Experience?
In the future, the complete scenario of viewership will change. No films shall be released in theatres, everything will be accessible on the “AR Cloud.” Viewers will be able to watch movies via the Internet on their 8K 3D Hologram Television. The Hologram experience will provide the viewer to watch the films in uttermost detail, from different angles.
Eugene Chung, who directed the critically acclaimed VR film Allumette says, “In the future VR will become increasingly blended with the AR cloud, which is essentially a digital copy of the world.” The Augmented Reality (AR) cloud is a digital copy of the real world that is accessible by any user from any device, from any location, and at any time.
The Smithsonian Magazine says, “Over the course of next 40 years, many cinematic visions will be compared to the reality of their time.”
Technically made movies by AR and AI will allow the viewers to walk through the film, interacting with the story, and can change the conclusions of the film. The viewers will be provided with maximum freedom. They can choose their favorite actor who they think will be apt for that role if they don’t like the main signing. The viewers can also choose themselves as the main characters and can watch a film where they are the main protagonist.
For example, in games like PUBG, Call of Duty, and Free Fire where the software allows the users to choose their favorite characters similarly in the future Filmmakers will also allow viewers to choose themselves as the characters of a particular movie.
“Viewers will have the ability to shape the narratives they experience”, says a BBC Culture report.

Can the Technology boost up so tremendously?
Many big IT firms like International Business Machines Corporation (I.B.M.) and Nvidia Corporation have already started to put effort into the future. I.B.M. has already started working on making Quantum Computers more powerful. Nvidia “bets” to make chips or Graphics Processing Units(GPUs can process many pieces of data simultaneously, making them very useful for devices) more minute to provide the maximum power to the Quantum Computers for super-fast processing.
According to Statista, 88 percent of the UK IT community suggested that “AI and Augmented Software” would experience high levels of change in the next 10 years.
Today, it takes months to shoot a film using AI, VR, and CGI. This cost so much that many small-scale filmmakers cannot afford it. But Michael Chaney, who is a Film and Television Professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design believes “the future of film is in Virtual and Augmented realities.”

Technology Revolution will result in the Golden era of Play Theatre?
Play Theatre will remain instituted at the heart of world cultures for millennia. The future will surely be the golden age of theatre as everything including the number and range of productions, the quality of actors, directors, and designing all will be on the next level with the help of technology.
The theatre is something where the audience feels: “ I have to experience it, just looking at the stage will not fill my expectations.” People will desperately crave such an experience in the future. That experience will not be replaced by anything viewed on a 3D screen via OTT(over the top) platform. The audience’s desire for live performances and storytelling will increase the value of theatre along with the actors. When viewers will be tired of watching the full-packed edited contents of Television and Film productions they will be bound to go and watch live Plays or Stage performances. This will also help the thespians(Theatre actors) who will not find a role in any big-budget movies or shows in the future.
Suppose, you are watching Artificial Intelligence Powered 3D movie Avenger: Endgame, in a cinema hall. You are experiencing all those over-the-top action sequences via 3D glasses and at the same time hearing the applauds of the audience. The feeling and experience are mesmerizing. This will be the kind of experience people will have in the future while watching live performances. The audience will be able to watch those action sequences live in a Play due to the technology, which will be accompanied by visual effects.
According to James Cameron, director of the computer-generated 3D film Avatar- the highest-grossing movie of all time, cinema and plays theatres will exist even after 1000 years. In an interview with the Smithsonian Magazine, he says, “People want the group experience, the sense of going out and participating in film together.”
Conclusion
With the rapid advancement of Virtual Reality and AI technology, the possibilities to borrow already Used Ideas will be countless. Many filmmakers describe VR as “dangerous” as they will wield less control over their film than the viewers will do.
Steven Spielberg, who is a three-time Academy Award winner American director has already cautioned by saying that the Virtual Realm “gives the viewers a lot of latitude not to take direction from the storyteller but make their own choices.”
In a blog post of The Conversation Ray Kurzweil, an American inventor and futurist predict that “Artificial Intelligence will reach a stage where it will be able to engineer ever more powerful AI, leading to an exponential rise in the power of AI, far surpassing Human Intelligence.”
