WhatsApp claims Facebook has no access to transactions data

On January 28, WhatsApp stated that parent Facebook has no access to data on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions. The messaging service claims that the transaction data is encrypted and that Facebook does not have access to it in a clear format.

WhatsApp rolled out its payments service in India in November 2020 after approval from National Payments Corporation of India (NCPI). The company also said that transaction data is encrypted and stored only in India in line with Reserve Bank of India guidelines. The messaging service also emphasised that it doesn't store users' UPI PINs. Neither does it store other customer payment service information such as One Time Password (OTP), full account number, or any debit card details.

The service stated that if there is a conflict between WhatsApp Payments Privacy Policy and WhatsApp Privacy Policy the former is solely responsible for control of all UPI Payments.
