World Television Premiere of Gold on Zee Cinema

They Came…They Saw…They Conquered. India post the British Raj had just one dream – ‘200 saal ki gulami ka dena tha jawaab’. There’s no greater pride in sport than to see your country’s flag being hoisted on an international stage. That sentiment gets amplified, when the setup is at the 1948 Olympics in London, where the Indian hockey team had to prove that their dominance in the sport from 1928 to 1936, wasn’t by mere chance. The story of independent India’s 1st gold medal, GOLD showcases the journey of this spirited and lesser-known team that upstaged the British at the 1948 Olympics and made a statement against the English subjugation of 200 years.

Directed by Reema Kagti, the movie features Akshay Kumar, Mouni Roy, Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Kumar Singh, Amit Sadh and Sunny Kaushal essaying pivotal characters. Zee Cinema, Home Of Blockbusters will showcase the World TV Premiere of GOLD on Sunday, 28th October at 8pm. It isn’t just a film on hockey, it also reminds us of the painful reality of partition and how that brutally tore apart our nation. The production design and costumes are top notch and the cinematography and background score stand out with excellent finesse and technique. The hockey matches create a great amount of thrill and you will find yourself sitting at the edge of your seat and rooting for team India all the way.

Akshay Kumar playing Tapan Das said, “I play the role of a man who wanted to do something big for his country. Although the character of Tapan Das is flawed, his feelings and emotions represent the people who earnestly worked hard and were behind the win of the hockey team. Getting into the skin of the character, learning the nuances of Bengali and playing hockey realistically was important to lend credibility.”

Tapan Das (Akshay Kumar) is a junior manager for the British Indian hockey team in 1936 when they win in the finals against Germany in Berlin. Twelve years later, he makes a successful return at the Olympics, this time as the joint manager, with a dream to defeat the British in London and win gold. Das is determined to build a team and compete. Scouting for talent across the nation, he recruits Raghubir Pratap Singh (Amit Sadh), a Nawab and an enthusiastic player, Imtiaz Shah (Vineet Kumar Singh), a reliable player with leadership skills, Himmat Singh (Sunny Kaushal), a promising talent from Punjab and others. In this endeavor, he’s assisted by retired hockey captain Samrat (Kunal Kapoor) and Das’ own wife Monobina (Mouni Roy). How India wins the prestigious 1st Olympic Gold against all odds forms the rest of the story.
