Zee Classic brings Hrishikesh Mukherjee's masterpiece "Abhimaan" for viewers' pleasure

1973 was an unforgettable year for Amitabh Bachchan who not only became an overnight sensation with the portrayal of an angry young man in Zanjeer but also delivered a heart wrenching performance in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s sensitive and pragmatic film ‘Abhimaan’. Adhering to its core proposition ‘Woh Zamaana Kare Deewana’, Zee Classic brings this classic musical drama ‘Abhimaan’ on Friday, 17th July at 9 PM.

Known for his trademark style of portraying reality on screen, Hrishikesh Mukherjee delves into the marriage of Subir and Uma in Abhimaan. Subir, the reigning star of the music industry, falls in love with the simple and supremely talented Uma. All’s well in the marriage till the time Uma starts singing and surpasses Subir’s fame. Apart from the realistic portrayal of characters and a true to life storyline, an aspect which could not be missed in a Hrishikesh Mukherjee movie was the melodious music. S.D. Burman delivers one his finest soundtracks with Abhimaan. Be it the peppy ‘Meet na mila re man ka’ or the profound ‘Loote koi man ka nagar’, each one of them carries the story forward. The heart stealing number of ‘Teri Bindiya re’ epitomizes the romance between the powerful couple.

One of the lesser known facts around the film is that few weeks before the shoot of Abhimaan, one of the lead financers backed out on Hrishikesh Mukherjee. It was then that Jaya Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan who were so moved by the story came ahead and invested their own money to make the film. The film went on to become a masterpiece appreciated by generations to come.
