Zee Classic celebrates the life and work of the monarch of 'New Wave Cinema' - Shabana Azmi

Zee Classic, the Hindi movie channel with an outstanding library of Indian cinematic classics and its core proposition ‘Woh Zamaana Kare Deewana’, celebrates the noteworthy body of work from the golden age of Indian Cinema. With a view to showcase  a set of some of the most contextual movies of all times and to celebrate stars that have been a part of this movement, the channel is all set to honor Shabana Azmi who is the foremost member of the ‘New Wave Cinema’ on four consecutive Saturdays, starting 9 May 2015. Actor extraordinaire, she has inspired many with her bold choice of films. Think of Shabana Azmi and images of her roles in off-beat Hindi cinema come to mind. Being one of the pillars of the Indian New Wave in the 70’s era, Azmi, a fresh FTII graduate was a leading light of such films and her work over the years has captured the attention of both critics and discerning audiences alike.

Every Saturday morning from 8 AM onwards, Zee Classic will bring you the best of the cinematic prowess of Shabana Azmi with Ankur, Nishant, Mandi and Saaz. From playing a docile and helpless farmer’s wife in Ankur to being part of modern day Ramayana in Nishant, Shabana Azmi owned each character that she impersonated on-screen. Mandi saw Azmi in a character like never before. The crude, selfish yet likable "Bai" is till date one of her best roles and Saaz showcased Shabana as a crusader for all those women who need to break the barrier and come of her own.

The veteran actor starring as a married villager in the movie Ankur will be telecast on Saturday, May 9th from 8 AM onwards on Zee Classic. The movie follows the life of a married man who seduces his servant and is unable to accept the responsibilities of her resulting pregnancy. When Surya (Anant Nag) is made to go through child marriage with Saru (Priya Tendulkar), he must wait till she comes of age causing him to feel sexually frustrated. However, when he comes across hi servant Lakshmi (Shabana Azmi), he feels instantly attracted to her. As Lakshmi’s deaf-mute alcoholic husband, Kishtayya (Sadhu Meher) gets accused of stealing toddy, he is publicly humiliated resulting in him leaving town and Lakshmi is left behind with Surya in the house.What will happen next? Will they end up sharing intimate moments and what will be the consequences?
