Brands celebrate Onam
Kerala’s most auspicious and celebrated festival, Onam, marks the harvest season and commemorates the homecoming of King Mahabali. The story goes that the Devas being insecure about King Mahabali’s power and popularity wanted to end his reign. They then sent Vamana in the form of a dwarf Brahmin to Earth, who took Mahabali to patala, the underworld. Vamana requested Mahabali for three feet of land, as a gift from the generous King in order to test him. In the end, being unable to place his third feet, Mahabali offered his own head to place Vamana' third feet. Seeing the generosity of King Mahabali, Vamana fulfilled the former’s wish to visit his land and people once in every year. The return of King Mahabali is celebrated as Onam in Kerala every year.
It lasts for 10 days and is celebrated with a number of cultural events where people rejoice with joy, happiness, laughter and a overall positive spirit. Both men and women wear traditional attire and decorate their homes with beautiful flowers and rangoli. The first day of Onam is celebrated as Atham, while the day ends with Thiruvonam, the most important day. The festival is symbolised by ‘Pookalam’ which are floral designs, lit and adorned with bright lamps. Cultural events during these days include Vallamkali or snake boat race. Grand banquets or Onam Sadhyas are organised during this joyful time, accompanied by music, dance, etc. Sadhya is a nine-course meal which comprises of 11-13 dishes and is served on banana leaf. It is one of the main highlights of Onam.
