Dr. Samir Shah confirmed as first Indian-origin BBC Chairman

Dr. Samir Shah, a celebrated India-born media executive with over 40 years of experience in UK broadcasting, has been confirmed as the new BBC chairman. He is the first Indian-origin person to assume the role at BBC.

His selection was approved by King Charles III after undergoing scrutiny by cross-party MPs and being chosen as the government's preferred candidate in December. He will assume the role on March 4, 2024, succeeding Richard Sharp.

As BBC chairman, Shah will oversee the board's decisions, ensuring the broadcaster's independence and acting in the public interest.
Shah, aged 72, brings a wealth of experience to the position, having worked extensively in TV production and journalism. He has been honored with a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to television and heritage. Shah's knowledge of the BBC, along with his commitment to promoting diversity in broadcasting, are highlighted as valuable assets for the role.
In his statement, Shah expressed his ambition to help the BBC navigate the challenges of a rapidly changing media landscape. He acknowledges the BBC's significant role in British life and its duty to reach a wide audience across the country.
Born in Aurangabad, India, in 1952, Shah migrated to England in 1960. He has held various positions in the broadcasting industry, including head of current affairs and political programs at the BBC. Prior to his appointment as BBC chairman, he served as the CEO of Juniper, an independent television and radio production company.

Shah's contributions extend beyond his professional roles; he is a Fellow of the Royal Television Society, a Visiting Professor of Creative Media at Oxford University, and holds a Special Professorship in the Department of Post-Conflict Studies at the University of Nottingham. Additionally, he co-authored the government's Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities report in 2021.
