Lulu Wang’s Expats comes to an end, here’s what the finale might entail.

Lulu Wang first read ‘The Expatriates’ by Janice Y. K. Lee while she was on the press tour for her acclaimed 2019 film The Farewell. Traveling through Sydney and meeting a stream of people from the global Asian diaspora, she connected with the 2016 novel, which centers on three American expats living in Hong Kong. From the outset, Expats has garnered rave reviews for its nuanced portrayal of the immigrant experience. Critics have lauded the show's authenticity, praising its ability to capture the complexities of navigating new cultures, balancing family expectations, and forging personal identities. The audience, too, has been swept up in the characters' journeys, resonating with their struggles and triumphs.

Much of the show's success hinges on the phenomenal performances of its leading ladies, Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, and Ji Young Yoo. Kidman, a powerhouse of talent, impresses with emotional depth as Margaret, an American expat facing cultural challenges and marital issues, while Blue shines as Hilary, a successful career woman who is also a close friend of Margaret's. “Life doesn't give us tidy endings or closures often, and so much of this show is about: How do you cope and how do you go on and how do you have hope, when the world, when your life doesn't give you closure, when it doesn't give you clear answers?” Wang says. “I have never been one for the classic end, 'happily ever after, the end' kind of thing. But I always look for hope,” she continues. “I'm looking for something that is true and poignant and hopeful and leaves people with a sense of their own resilience.”  Whether Wang delivers a tearful goodbye or a hopeful new beginning, one thing is for sure, Expats has left an indelible mark on viewers and critics alike, and its impact will resonate long after the curtain falls.

Directed by Lulu Wang, Expats features Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, and Ji-young Yoo in headlining roles. The limited drama series premiered exclusively on Prime Video with two episodes on January 26, 2024, and will now drop its final sixth episode on February 23, 2024.
