The 59th edition of Cannes Lions 2012 was inaugurated yesterday amidst great pomp and fair and with the presence of around 12,000 delegates.

The first day of Cannes Lions 2012 faired pretty good for India as it managed to win eight shortlists in the Direct Lions category. The entries that have made it to the category are McCann Erickson (Keeping the Legend Alive for Saregama India); Ogilvy (ifold for Vodafone India); Leo Burnett (Ink Pad for Door Step School); DDB Mudra (Growing Trees for Fedrigoni); M&C Saatchi (Limited Edition for Animal Shelter); and Cheil Worldwide (Minus One Project for Samsung Printer) . BBDO India has secured two nominations; one for India's first DIY Calendar (for Johnson & Johnson) and the second one for Child Welfare Fund's campaign, World's Youngest Job Applicant (for Plan India).
India has also received four nominations in the Promo & Activations category.  The Times of India’s newspaper delivery activity in the state of Kerala by JWT, India is one of them. DDB Mudra got nominated for its Sanctuary Magazine -The Killing Stapler campaign. Leo Burnett’s Ink Pad initiative also won a nomination in the Promo category. Percept H has been nominated for The Anti terror Bag campaign.

India is all set to shine at Cannes as The Practice Porter; an Indian PR agency has registered its entry into the PR Lions Category.  The PR Lions category was founded in 2009. India has won four metals in this category since its inception: one in 2010 and three in 2011. These awards however were won by advertising agencies. This is the first time ever that an Indian PR agency has made its way to Cannes.

Day One has been good enough, which has raised expectations for Day 2.
