English Vinglish to release in China Mainland across 6000 screens

India's critically acclaimed and award-winning film, English Vinglish, is set to hit 6000 theatres on the Chinese mainland on February 24, 2023. 

English Vinglish premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received a 5-minute standing ovation. The film saw its theatrical release in India in October 2012 by Eros International and instantly received widespread critical acclaim. It became a major financial success grossing over INR 102 crore.

Starring the late Bollywood superstar Sridevi, the Hindi family comedy-drama narrates the story of a quiet, sweet-tempered housewife who endures small slights from her well-educated husband and daughter every day because of her inability to speak and understand English. Her attempt to learn the language helps her rediscover herself and reassert her value as a mother and a wife.

The film marked Sridevi's return to the silver screen after a 15-year hiatus and went on to become India's official entry to the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category for 2012.

English Vinglish marked the directorial debut of Gauri Shinde. The female protagonist Shashi (Sridevi) was written by Shinde, inspired by her mother who ran a business for spice and would often say that if she knew how to speak proper English, her business would have been bigger.

English Vinglish has earned global acclaim at several international festivals, and for her stellar performance in the film, Sridevi was honoured with the title of "Meryl Streep of India".
