IRS Q2 2011 Results: Loss and gain, balancing act for English Magazines

The Indian Readership Survey 2011 results of the second quarter indicate an ensemble of growth and decline of the players in the top 10 list.

India Today, India's largest read English magazine comes at the top position. Adding 74,000 readers in this quarter, its average issue readership (AIR) is 17.24 lakh, compared to 16.50 lakh in the previous quarter.

Regaining its position after two quarters, Reader's Digest makes a comeback at No.2 position, from the third place. Compared to 9.6 lakh in the previous quarter, Reader's Digest has recorded an AIR of 9.98 lakh in the current quarter, with an addition of 28,000 readers.

The monthly magazines on the third and fourth spot seem to be on a losing line. "General Knowledge Today' to No.3, pushed by the loss of 25,000 readers, thus recording an AIR of 9.77 lakh as compared to 10.02 lakh in Q1 of IRS 2011. Similarly, "Competition Success Review' has lost 30,000 readers this quarter and recorded an AIR of 6.54 lakh in this quarter as compared to 6.84 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

Sitting at No. 5 Outlook' has recorded its AIR at 4.56 lakh in IRS Q2 2011 as compared to 4.38 lakh in the previous quarter by adding 18,000 readers this quarter. Making a remarkable growth, The Week occupies No. 6 spot, after recording an AIR of 3.96 lakh as compared to 3.25 lakh in IRS Q1 2011.

Bollywood magazines however seem to have taken a back seat. At No. 7 is Filmfare losing again in this quarter; has recorded an AIR of 3.66 lakh in Q2 of IRS 2011 as compared to 3.82 lakh in the previous quarter. On similar lines, Stardust has declined by losing 10,000 readers and has recorded AIR of 3.42 lakh in the current quarter as compared to 3.52 lakh in IRS Q1 2011, taking it to No. 8 position.

Holding the No. 9 spot is Femina. Adding a few readers in this quarter, it has seen marginal growth and has taken its current AIR at 3.39 lakh as compared to 3.37 lakh in Q1 of IRS 2011.

Though at the last position in the top 10 list, making a new entry is Business Today by adding 24,000 readers in this quarter, taking its AIR to 3.33 lakh in Q2 as compared to 3.09 Q1 of IRS 2011. | By Ankita Tanna [ankita(at)adgully.com]
