Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ dominate VOD landscape in EU

Three major services - Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ - account for 85% of viewing time in the European Union, according to two groundbreaking reports by The European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

These reports shed light on the consumption and availability of content on Video-on-Demand (VOD) platforms across Europe.

The reports, titled “SVOD Usage in the European Union” and “Film and TV Content in TVOD, SVOD and FOD Catalogues - 2023 Edition”, offer comprehensive analyses of the evolving landscape of VOD services and content preferences in the European Union.

Authored by Christian Grece and Jean-Augustin Tran, TV and VOD Analysts within the Observatory’s Department for Market Information, these reports present a thorough examination of VOD usage patterns and content offerings across 25 member states of the European Union.

Key Findings on SVOD Usage in the European Union:

Fiction works dominate viewing time, comprising 87% and 95% of film and TV season consumption, respectively.
European content commands a significant share, with 30% of SVOD viewing time attributed to works from the European Union plus the UK.
While US works are overconsumed compared to their catalog share, European works, particularly non-national EU works, are underconsumed.

Key Findings on Film and TV Content in VOD Catalogues:

European works constitute 31% of all content in VOD catalogues across the EU, with EU27 works representing 21% and other European works 10%. VOD catalogues in high- and mid-volume production countries rely more on national works, while those in lower volume production countries predominantly feature EU non-national works.

These reports, supported by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Commission, provide invaluable insights for stakeholders in the audiovisual industry, policymakers, and researchers.
