A tribute to the the great legends who are no more in our midst

Year 2012 has been viewed as a tough year for the industry as a whole. It was also seen to be  a sad one in other aspects as well. In 2012, the lives of  many legends from different fields came to an end. With the year end in sight and considering the great loss we have faced,  Adgully requests  all their readers to pay a silent tribute to the elaborate list of the honorable and dedicated people we lost this year.

 

The following are some of the great stalwarts of our times whose life came to an end in 2012:

Neil Armstrong, the American astronaut who made "one giant leap for mankind" when he became the first man to walk on the moon lost his life this year . He was 82 years old.

Dr Verghese Kurien, the father of White Revolution in India who spent his entire life in the small town of Anand, Gujarat was the former chairman of Anand Milk Union Ltd (Amul) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). Often referred to as the "Milkman of India", Dr Kurien was responsible for helping make India the largest milk producer in the world with close to 17 per cent of the global production. The Operation Flood that he launched was the largest dairy development programme in the world and it helped to replicate the Anand model of cooperative dairying across India.

Pandit Ravi Shankar, the sitar virtuoso who became a hippie musical icon of the 1960s after hobnobbing with the Beatles and who introduced traditional Indian ragas to Western audiences over an eight-decade career, died on Dec. 11. He was 92.

Popular comedian and film director Jaspal Bhatti, met with an untimely death when his car met with an  accident . He was 57 . He touched a chord with the masses with his humorous take on problems plaguing the common man.

Dara Singh, a famous wrestler , a well known actor and a veteran in the entertainment industry who was known for his kindness and humble nature passed away due to a cardiac arrest. He was 84.

Rajesh Khanna, one of the biggest superstars of Hindi cinema left  for his heavenly abode on July 18, 2012. His passion for acting has given  us some amazing films to be remembered for a life time and definitely left a void in the film industry.

The popular Pakistani singer and Ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan passed away on June 13, 2012. The celebrated singer had also lent his voice to many songs in Indian films.

Vilasrao Deshmukh, Congress politician and former Maharashtra chief minister died after battling a liver disorder. He was 67. He joined the Congress in the 1970s and won successive state assembly elections over the next decade.

Joy Mukhejee known for his romantic roles in films like Love in Tokyo, Shagird, Ek Bar Muskurado and Phir Wahi Dil Laaya Hoon passed away on March 9, 2012.

Achala Sachdev, popularly known as the 'Zohra Jabeen' of Bollywood, after her popular song ‘Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen’ in film Waqt, bid adieu to the Bollywood industry on April 30, 2012.

Avtar Kishan Hangal, one of Bollywood's best known character actors, died in his 90s. He was known as the grand old man of Indian cinema. Hangal appeared in over 200 films in a career spanning five decades.

Yash Chopra, known as India's ‘king of romance’ passed away after a brief illness leaving the  Bollywood industry sad. His contribution to the film industry included family oriented movies and romantic films  which have been imprinted in the mind’s of every movie buff. He was 80.

Popularly known as the ‘Tiger of Maharashtra’ in Mumbai , Bal Thackeray passed away in November 2012 . His large following was shaken at the news of his sad demise.

Inder Kumar Gujral, a former Prime Minister, died of a lung infection. He was 92. The former Congress member joined the Janata Dal in the 1980s.

No doubt all the above mentioned have been snatched away from our midst but they will always continue to live in our hearts and be cherished for a lifetime by one and all !
