Adgully Exclusive | I still want to be an actor: Ayushmann, VJ, MTV

The journey from a MTV roadie, to a MTV VJ has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride for Ayushmann Khurana. If winning MTV Roadies, gave him a platform, MTV gave Ayushmann wings, which would see him fly to new heights.

Since then, he has had bundle of offers from Colors, Star Plus for shows like India's got talent, Music ka Maha Muqqabla and of course the recently concluded IPL. But the Chandigarh lad knows where his feet are and that's why, soon after he won the Roadies, he didn't waste time and went back to complete his studies.

Unlike other participants, who decided to stay on in Mumbai to become an actor or a VJ, Ayushmann decided to write his own destiny.

And for that finishing his studies was quintessential. Ayushmann feels studies play an important role in shaping up one's life and career. Therefore he went back to complete his English honors from DAV College and later on also did a Journalism course from Punjab University.

Before making it to the top-level, Ayushmann started as a Radio Jockey before entering the television medium. He was the breakfast host who used to greet the Delhiites in his famous show ” Maan Na Maan, Mai Tera Ayushmann. Besides this he also did theatre for five years, which laid a strong foundation for his on-screen presence.

So how difficult was it getting up there as a VJ?

"I was in touch with Raghu and the MTV people. I was doing well as a RJ in Delhi. MTV were looking for a VJ for their new show called "Wassup'. I auditioned for it and got selected," Ayushmann explained.

So did a Journalism degree help him while the auditions were going on?

"Definitely! It always helped me write a script," he said, while talking to AdGully.

"When I auditioned for "Wassup', it was about current affairs and all those people who auditioned for it didn't have a clue about current affairs and my journalism course helped me to understand that. I feel a journalism course is a must for every VJ," he added.

However surprisingly, Ayushmann has never worked as journalist. He did journalism because it intrigued him, but heart in heart he always wanted to be an actor.

"I always wanted to be an actor and I still want to be an actor and I am working towards it. In college I was very active in theatre, public skills and not like anybody who lives in the fantasy world like someday I will go to Mumbai and become an actor.

"I wish somebody would knock at my door and say Ayushmann I want to cast you for a movie, but that's not going to happen I am sure. I have been offered some roles but they have been second leads or something else. I want to wait for the right time and till the time I will enjoy television," he added.

According to Ayushmann the secret to become a successful VJ lies in the fact that you have to keep your eyes and ears open all the time. "Just be yourself, keep your eyes and ears open that's it. I think it is very simple and there is no formula to success," he said.

"Success is the fickle mystery but failure is your friend, philosopher and guru/ the problem with the youth today is they are ready to go to any extend to be famous," he added.

When quizzed as to what kind of roles will he prefer to do, he says he wants to do meaningful movies, rather than running around the trees.

"Frankly speaking I envy Abhay Deol. I think he has made a niche for himself. He is not a quintessential hero who runs around the tree rather he is doing a lot of meaningful movies and I also want to do stuff like that," he said.

About Roadies, the boy next door feels that the auditions have become meaner and brutal. "The problem with the youth today is they are ready to go to any extend to be famous," he explains.

"When I was auditioned, it was very simple and sweet and only one season. I got into roadies just because of the travelling part, though he is the first one to accept the fact that he is not a very adventurous by nature.

So is Mr. Khurana planning to get settled any time soon?

"I'm married to my work and MTV is my mother in law," he said.
