Amazon Prime Video to hike annual subscription rate by 50% to Rs 1,499

Amazon Prime Video is set to increase its annual subscription from Rs 999 to Rs 1,499, an increase of 50%, as per the information available on its website. Amazon Prime is also revising its monthly and quarterly subscription plans. As per the website, the monthly price which stands at Rs 129, will be hiked to Rs 179, while quarterly price will go up from Rs 329 to Rs 459.

So far, Amazon Prime has had one of the lowest subscription rates, but with the revised pricing, the annual rate of Rs 1,499 will be similar to that of Disney+ Hotstar’s annual rate for its Premium plan. Incidentally, Disney+ Hotstar had revised its subscription rates from September 1, 2021. Disney+ Hotstar also offers two other annual subscription plans – Mobile, which is priced at Rs 499 and Super, which is priced at Rs 1,499.

On the other hand, ZEE5 is offering a limited offer discounted annual plan for Rs 499, as against the regular price of Rs 999, as per the OTT platform’s website. ZEE5 is offering a quarterly plan as well for Rs 299.

A quick comparison makes Netflix the costliest OTT platform in India, with monthly price of Rs 700. However, it has kept the monthly subscription rate for its mobile-only plan for just Rs 199. The Basic plan costs Rs 499 per month, while the Standard plan is priced at Rs 649.

As reported earlier, Amazon Prime launched its Prime Video Channels in September 2021, wherein it is acting as an intermediary, allowing Prime members the option for add-on subscriptions of popular OTT services – Discovery+, Lionsgate Play, Eros Now, Docubay, MUBI, Hoichoi, Manorama Max, and Shorts TV – and streaming their content on the Amazon Prime Video app and website in India.
