Amul celebrates Rishi Sunak’s rise to the top with smart word play

India has had much to cheer this Diwali – firstly, India’s thrilling win over Pakistan in their ICC T-20 World Cup match, and secondly, Rishi Sunak being made the Prime Minister of UK, the first person of Indian origin and first person of colour to hold this top office.

While Sunak’s appointment has been hailed across the world, Amul, the king of topical advertising, has come out with a special ad on social media to congratulate the new UK Prime Minister.

The ad shows Sunak walking on a street in London with the Amul girl and with the Tower Bridge in the background. The simple copy text is a smart play on Sunak’s name – “Rishi Sunuk!”. The text ends with “Amul Prime Makhan”.

Amul captioned the post as “#Amul Topical: Welcoming Britain's first Indian origin PM!”

Interestingly, this is not the first time that Amul has created an ad around Sunak. When he was appointed UK’s Finance Minister in February 2020, Amul had released an ad showing Sunak walking with the Amul Girl while munching on buttered bread. The body copy read: “Will UK become Rishi rich?” and ended with an oft quoted dialogue from a Shah Rukh Khan film, “Amul, naam toh Sunak hoga”.

Even as world leaders have wholeheartedly welcomed Sunak as UK’s Prime Minister and the Indian Diaspora is jubilant over yet another Indian taking charge of an important top global post, all eyes are on what measures Sunak will take to revive UK’s economy. He has a tough task ahead of him.
