Barefaced Liar release their album 'Mind Over Matter' along with second video 'All I Have'

After the much lauded release of their first single ‘Mind Over Matter’ last month, Delhi based Modern rock band Barefaced Liar released their album of the same name yesterday across all digital platforms.

The band, comprising of Akshay Chowdhry and Sumant Balakrishnan (Bala) are also releasing a video for their second single ‘All I Have’. The song was born out of rough material that producer Zorran Mendonsa deemed fit to be included on the album. It also marks the first time Bala and Akshay are switching duties between lead and backing vocals and highlights the bands’ Indian influences via Chowdhry’s slide-guitar playing.

Talking about the single, Chowdhry says, “All I Have came together to be a contemporary Indian Indie song while retaining Barefaced Liar’s signature sound with a big chorus and vocal harmonies”. Since this song is a lot mellower than their first single, it is indicative of the wide-ranging sonic palette of the album.

The video shot by Fahd Shah (who also directed the video for Mind over Matter) features Indian actress and former veejay Peeya Rai Choudhuri as it’s main protagonist. The idea behind the video can be echoed in each of our lives- we all wish and wonder if things had gone a different way or if we had made different choices in our lives - in essence All I Have's video speaks of missing that spark that you once had and coming to terms with what is left over. In the video, Peeya re-visits her old home trying to relive precious moments that only she remembers and knows the true meaning of. In the end, she realises she needs to move on and her only form of solace is through doing what she loves, which in Peeya’s case was dance.

‘Mind Over Matter’, the album that comes five years after their debut album ‘Barefaced Liar’, sees the band getting more comfortable in their skin. Playing live while working on the album, and the release of the single “Toe the Line” in 2012 gave the band a good indication of their future direction and sound. As mentioned before, Zorran Mendonsa helmed production on the album and helped the band refine their sound while mastering by Jens Bogren raised production values to a whole new level.

“Its possible to hear something new every time you listen to the songs on the album as Zorran’s production is really detailed and we went to great lengths during the mixing of the album to ensure that every element stands out, but doesn’t stick out” says Bala, he adds “for example ‘Back to the Basics’ is easily the production powerhouse on the album with heaps of synth layers, really cool vocal effects, a driving rhythm section and other elements that keep it fresh sonically”.

Talking about the lyrics on the album, all nine songs have been written to be very relatable and resonate with situations or issues that are common in everyday life. While “Mind over Matter” is about having the conviction to face the unknown, “Big July” talks about a personal battle with addiction while another song “Dig Yourself In” is an ode to the Indian indie scene where perseverance is key to a bands’ very survival.
