BCCI mulls Women’s IPL in 2023; six teams proposed

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in the process of planning a Women’s IPL tournament in 2023, as per media reports. Around 5 or 6 teams have been proposed for the first edition of the Women’s IPL.

Media reports quoted Sourav Ganguly, President, BCCI, as saying that this season will see four exhibition games of Women’s T-20 Challenge being played alongside the men’s IPL 2022.

A Governing Council meeting of the BCCI was held on Friday, March 25, 2022, wherein the possibility of holding the inaugural edition of the Women’s IPL was discussed. Post the Governing Council meet, Ganguly told the media that an AGM will have to give its approval first to the Women’s IPL.

The ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup has garnered a lot of interest from viewers and advertisers alike, especially with the Indian women’s cricket team putting up a strong performance. A no-ball in the last over of India’s match against South Africa saw the Indian team missing out on a semi-final berth.
