BSNL loses up to 50 % market share in 3 yrs

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in past three years has lost about half of its market. In year 2006-07 it lost 31 per cent of its market share, and this year it has lost 16.71 per cent.

When asked about the same to Telecom minister, A. Raja he said, "BSNL, being a Central Public Sector Undertaking, has to follow established institutional procedures in its various functions, which is not required in a private company."

However, the government clearly said such situation occurred mainly due to strong completion in the market, and not due to managerial reasons.

BSNL is not in a good state as it was earlier. It has lost market share not just in wireline telephony but also in the mobile phone segment.

BSNL's market share in wireline telephony has come down to 76.03 per cent in 2009-10 (till 31.10.2009) while in case of mobile services the share has fallen to 12.18 per cent from 18.66 per cent.
