GAMEXX 2022: Come, be a part of India’s gaming juggernaut

The gaming industry in India is on a steep growth curve. According to Invest India, revenue from online gaming grew 28% in 2021 to $1.2 billion and is expected to reach $1.9 billion by 2024. There are 303 million gamers in India and growing. India has the largest fantasy sports market, with a user base of 130 million. Invest India further states that the country’s percentage of new paying users (NPUs) in gaming has been the fastest growing in the world for two consecutive years, at 40% (2020) reaching 50% in 2021.

Between Jan-Sep 2021, $1.6 billion were received in funding and M&A, with Real Money Games attracting ~$700 million.

At a CAGR of nearly 30 per cent, industry reports suggest that this market is likely to be worth $7 billion by financial year 2026, according to Statista.

Mordor Intelligence attributes the growth of gaming in the country to the growing younger population, higher disposable incomes, the introduction of new gaming genres, and the rapidly increasing number of smartphone and tablet users.

Mordor Intelligence further states that a key shift in India that the gaming industry is witnessing is that now there is a lot more focus on game development. In the past 2-3 years, more than 200 game development companies have come up, creating their own intellectual properties (IPs) in games. The COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in lockdowns, accelerated online gaming in India. Time spent on games increased dramatically as virtual zones became avenues to socialise, connect, and compete.

According to a Broadcast Audience Research Council India (BARC) report, the average time spent by gaming users per week in India increased by 44% during the pandemic. The time increased to 3 hours 38 minutes per week during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2 hours 31 minutes pre-pandemic.
